Success!

The first Park(ing) Day in Dallas was a grand success!   Thanks to all the merchants in the Bishop Arts District who helped the event become a success including The Soda Gallery, Bubble, De Corazon Gallery, Hunkies Hamburgers, Green Pet, and Make.  Also, many thanks to Home Depot for supplying the beautiful plants and Bennett Miller Homes for supplying the sod and labor.

Three parks were created along Bishop.  By converting these three parking spaces into temporary parks the point was made that more emphasis should be given to designing spaces for people over cars.  When a 10' x 20'  parking spot is converted into a park it's easy to realize the potential space dedicated cars represents.

The main purpose of the event was to bring attention to the work the Oak Cliff Chamber is doing to improve the quality of like in the area.  This includes building bike lanes, reintroducing streetcar service to Oak Cliff, encouraging recycling and other sustainable practices, and strengthening the arts.  Through outreach, the Chamber hopes to increase community involvement in these efforts.

Stay tuned for a bigger and better Park(ing) Day 2009!

Planning Session

Parking Day is coming up this Friday. I would like to have a planning meeting on Tuesday September 15 to figure out specifics. If you are planning building a park in the Bishop Arts District lets talk. I'm thinking 7pm at Bolsa on Davis.

Thanks,

Parking Day Sept. 19th

Parking Day 2008 is coming to Oak Cliff September 19th, 2008. For one evening the Bishop Arts District will gain a pocket park for everyone to enjoy.

This public art installment will be used to highlight the efforts to improve the quality of life in the area through alternative transportation options, community gardens, and other green initiatives. Area businesses are also welcome to join the fun and set up their own installations.

Conceived by REBAR, a San Francisco-based art collective, PARK(ing) Day is a one-day, global event centered in San Francisco where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks. In 2007 there were over 200 Parks created in over 50 cities.

Hope to see you there!
